Carney will sit behind a big, heavy, wood desk in a sombre fourth-floor office overlooking Ottawa's Wellington Street, where he can watch the frequent buses and the civil servants trundle by like clockwork every day. He'll have no time to settle in. With Mr. Dodge announcing this week that the bank's key interest rate needs to come down significantly, and soon, Mr. Carney will have to figure out by March 4 whether another small rate cut of a quarter percentage point will do, or whether he should take a page from the play book of the U.S. Federal Reserve and opt for more aggressive cuts. He'll also have to decide how much support the central bank wants to give to Canadian financial institutions struggling to deal with a ballooning subprime mortgage meltdown and volatile credit conditions.
McCain ads go after Romney
McCain is also airing a radio ad criticizing Romney's healthcare reform in Massachusetts, his fiscal record in the Bay State, and his proposed bailout of the auto industry. The Romney camp, in turn, accused McCain of following an m.o. of going negative in the final hours. "Senator McCain has, once again, launched a last-minute, negative ambush against Governor Romney with radio ads, flyers -- you name it," Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said in a statement. "This is just the McCain way," the statement continued. "Senator McCain always sinks to a lower level and offers distortions and flailing attacks against his opponents when a campaign is close. His agitation is always on display when a race gets close. If you ever needed proof that the Washington insider with the wrong record on Republican policies is threatened by the new ideas and strong record of Governor Romney, now you have it." .
Fierce storms drench California
Taking advantage of a lull in a week of storms, searchers found the body of Christopher Allport, one of two people reported missing Friday near the Mountain High ski resort in Wrightwood. Allport, 60, was a character actor who has appeared on such TV shows as ER, Felicity and Matlock. He was the third skier killed in the avalanche. Meanwhile, large swaths of California braced for another bout of heavy rain. Storms have dumped rain onto Southern California since Monday, with some areas receiving more moisture in that time than during the entire rainy season last year. LOS ANGELES Small private copter crashes on freeway A helicopter pilot was killed when his small craft crashed into the southbound lanes of the Harbor Freeway in South Los Angeles and burst into flames, authorities said.
